Curepipe - History

History

The town's name, Curepipe, is said to be originated from the word "curer sa pipe" (French) which translates to 'cleaning the pipe" (English). There are several theories by historians as to the naming of the city. Some historians believe that the name was given as travelers and soldiers from the 19th century, traveled from Port Louis and Grand Port (Mahébourg) to refill their pipes in Curepipe. Other historians do not share the same view and believe that the name was given after a late landowner during the 18th century.

Curepipe is also referred to as "La Ville Lumière" (in English "The Town of Light") since it was the first town in the island to run on electricity.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

If man is reduced to being nothing but a character in history, he has no other choice but to subside into the sound and fury of a completely irrational history or to endow history with the form of human reason.
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)

To care for the quarrels of the past, to identify oneself passionately with a cause that became, politically speaking, a losing cause with the birth of the modern world, is to experience a kind of straining against reality, a rebellious nonconformity that, again, is rare in America, where children are instructed in the virtues of the system they live under, as though history had achieved a happy ending in American civics.
    Mary McCarthy (1912–1989)

When the landscape buckles and jerks around, when a dust column of debris rises from the collapse of a block of buildings on bodies that could have been your own, when the staves of history fall awry and the barrel of time bursts apart, some turn to prayer, some to poetry: words in the memory, a stained book carried close to the body, the notebook scribbled by hand—a center of gravity.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
