Conroe ISD Academy of Science and Technology

Conroe ISD Academy Of Science And Technology

The Conroe Independent School District Academy of Science and Technology, in Conroe, Texas is a specialized magnet school in science and technology; also a member of NCSSSMST. It was founded at Oak Ridge High School with the first graduates in 1991. The AST relocated to The Woodlands College Park High School in stages from 2005 to 2007. The first headmaster was Dr. David Archer, who held the position until 1991, and was later led by Dr. Ron Laugen who held the position until 2007. The current Academy headmistress is Dr. Susan Caffery.

Math, science, and electives in these areas are taught by the AST faculty, with most of these classes including students only from the Academy. All other courses are taken with the high school along with students who are not in the magnet program.

In order to obtain membership to the Academy of Science and Technology, one must go through a process of applying, testing, and essay reviewing. A selected portion of the students are invited to an interview with two members of the Academy of Science and Technology faculty before being accepted. For each class, 65 students are initially accepted, and ten are wait listed. The size of each class at a given time is between 65 and 77 students. There are approximately 270 students in the Academy. The students are selected from College Park, the Woodlands High and Oak Ridge High- you do not have to be in the College Park zoning.

The one downside to the Academy is for the students who attend College Park High School- you are now competing against the top students from the Woodlands High School and Oak Ridge High School in academics and sports as well. Conroe ISD does not separate the Academy students from the College Park students for ranking purposes, despite the fact that the Academy students are the top students from the other two high schools as well. For those interested in Texas Universities using the "top 10%" rule for admission, you may well not make that percentage when competing against the best of three district high schools. Interestingly, a College Park student in the top 12% or so range would likely see himself/herself move up into the top 10% by moving to Oak Ridge or the Woodlands High, as the other schools are losing their top performers to the Academy.

Famous quotes containing the words academy, science and/or technology:

I realized early on that the academy and the literary world alike—and I don’t think there really is a distinction between the two—are always dominated by fools, knaves, charlatans and bureaucrats. And that being the case, any human being, male or female, of whatever status, who has a voice of her or his own, is not going to be liked.
    Harold Bloom (b. 1930)

There is a chasm between knowledge and ignorance which the arches of science can never span.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Technology is not an image of the world but a way of operating on reality. The nihilism of technology lies not only in the fact that it is the most perfect expression of the will to power ... but also in the fact that it lacks meaning.
    Octavio Paz (b. 1914)
