Views On The Pope

Some confessional Lutheran church bodies, such as the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, the Evangelical Lutheran Synod and the Church of the Lutheran Confession teach that the Roman papacy or office of the pope is an Antichrist, including this article of faith as part of a quia rather than quatenus subscription to the Book of Concord. This is also the teaching of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. A distinction should be made that "Antichrist" refers to the office, and not to the person.

Famous quotes containing the words views and/or pope:

A foreign minister, I will maintain it, can never be a good man of business if he is not an agreeable man of pleasure too. Half his business is done by the help of his pleasures: his views are carried on, and perhaps best, and most unsuspectedly, at balls, suppers, assemblies, and parties of pleasure; by intrigues with women, and connections insensibly formed with men, at those unguarded hours of amusement.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)

The worst of madmen is a saint run mad.
    —Alexander Pope (1688–1744)
