Colt Paterson - Military Acceptance

Military Acceptance

Colt sold a few of the long arms and handguns to the United States Army and they saw limited use in the Second Seminole War in Florida. In general though, the United States government considered the arms to be excessively fragile and prone to malfunction. The Republic of Texas bought 180 of the revolving shotguns and rifles and a like number of handguns for the Texas Navy. The repeating handguns were very popular with the Texas Rangers, providing them with sustained firepower against their Comanche adversaries. The weapon was especially decisive in the Battle of Bandera Pass. Captains Jack Hays and Samuel Walker of the Texas Rangers became major proponents of the Colt Revolvers and were successful in advocating military contracts for later models such as the Walker Colt.

Famous quotes containing the words military and/or acceptance:

I would sincerely regret, and which never shall happen whilst I am in office, a military guard around the President.
    Andrew Jackson (1767–1845)

Most women of [the WW II] generation have but one image of good motherhood—the one their mothers embodied. . . . Anything done “for the sake of the children” justified, even ennobled the mother’s role. Motherhood was tantamount to martyrdom during that unique era when children were gods. Those who appeared to put their own needs first were castigated and shunned—the ultimate damnation for a gender trained to be wholly dependent on the acceptance and praise of others.
    Melinda M. Marshall (20th century)
