Cluster Headache Treatments - Preventive

Preventive

Preventive treatments are used to provide the sufferer with a long-term reduction or elimination of the cluster headaches. These techniques are generally used in combination with abortive and transitional techniques in order to obtain the best therapeutic results.

The calcium channel blocker Verapamil is a first-line recommended preventative therapy. Dosages of 360–480 mg daily have been found effective in reducing Cluster headache attack frequency. Despite its success in randomized controlled trial, only 4 percent of patients with cluster headache report verapamil use. Current European guidelines suggest the use of the drug at a dose of at least 240 mg daily.

Methysergide, lithium and the anticonvulsant topiramate are recommended as alternative treatments. Additionally, Magnesium supplements have been shown to be of some benefit in about 40% of patients who have low serum levels of magnesium.

Anecdotal evidence also suggests Vitamin D3 may assist in preventing cluster headaches by inhibiting nitric oxide production.

Famous quotes containing the word preventive:

Whether in the field of health, education or welfare, I have put my emphasis on preventive rather than curative programs and tried to influence our elaborate, costly and ill- co-ordinated welfare organizations in that direction. Unfortunately the momentum of social work is still directed toward compensating the victims of our society for its injustices rather than eliminating those injustices.
    Agnes E. Meyer (1887–1970)

Next to the love of God, the love of country is the best preventive of crime.
    George Borrow (1803–1881)

General education is the best preventive of the evils now most dreaded. In the civilized countries of the world, the question is how to distribute most generally and equally the property of the world. As a rule, where education is most general the distribution of property is most general.... As knowledge spreads, wealth spreads. To diffuse knowledge is to diffuse wealth. To give all an equal chance to acquire knowledge is the best and surest way to give all an equal chance to acquire property.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
