Organization
The CFD is organized into five districts, commanded by two Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioners (ADFC), one for the Northern sections of the city (2-1-10) and one for the Southern sections (2-1-11) or they are commanded by a District Chief (2-1-2x or 2-1-3x) (Airports & District 3). The five districts (Districts 1 to 3 and Districts 5 to 6) are sub-divided into 24 battalions, each commanded by a Battalion Chief. The city's EMS Division is commanded by the Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner - EMS (2-1-12) and operates out of two EMS Field Divisions: There are two EMS Deputy Chief Paramedics, one for the North Division (4-4-1) and one for the South Division (4-4-2). They are assisted by two EMS Assistant Deputy Chief Paramedics, one for the North (4-4-11) and one for the South (4-4-12). Then there are eight EMS Field Officers/Paramedic Field Chiefs (4-5-1 to 4-5-8) for the eight EMS Field Districts.
As of January 1, 2012, the Chicago Fire Department implemented several administrative changes to its organization of districts and battalions. The new order from the CFD eliminates the position of District Chief, and has re-assigned the position of District Chief (2-1-2x & 2-1-3x) to the Assistant Deputy Commissioners (2-1-9 to 2-1-12), with the exception of District 3, which will retain a District Chief, as it commands the city's two airports. As part of the plan, District 4 was deactivated, along with District 1 headquarters being moved to Engine 18's quarters.
