Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System - Rolling Stock

Rolling Stock

The Chennai MRTS uses both 6-car and 9-car electrical multiple unit trains, although the 9-car trains are more prevalent during peak hours. The trains use overhead catenary for power supply and are broad gauge. They do feature neither air conditioning nor automatic train doors. The rolling stock of MRTS is same as that of other Chennai Suburban Railway lines. The power supply for traction is 25 kV voltage at a frequency of 50 Hz. For collecting power from 25 kV AC contact wire, pantographs are mounted on the roof of the traction vehicle. After a circuit breaker, the connection is made to a transformer that steps down this voltage to a level suitable for use by traction motors and control circuits. The DC supply for traction motors is made available through a rectifier circuit. A single train may have one or more motor coaches depending on the requirement. A 9-car rake is typified by 3 motor coaches each at the front, the middle and the last. The motors are used to run the wheels of the train at a stipulated speed limit. The MRTS coaches have entry and exit on both sides. The EMU coaches are manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory, Chennai.

Famous quotes containing the words rolling and/or stock:

It is only when we are very happy that we can bear to gaze merrily upon the vast and limitless expanse of water, rolling on and on with such persistent, irritating monotony, to the accompaniment of our thoughts, whether grave or gay. When they are gay, the waves echo their gaiety; but when they are sad, then every breaker, as it rolls, seems to bring additional sadness, and to speak to us of hopelessness and of the pettiness of all our joys.
    Emmuska, Baroness Orczy (1865–1947)

I have, thanks to my travels, added to my stock all the superstitions of other countries. I know them all now, and in any critical moment of my life, they all rise up in armed legions for or against me.
    Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923)
