General Forms For Organic Compounds

Chemical formula used for a series of compounds that differ from each other by a constant unit is called general formula. Such a series is called the homologous series, while its members are called homologs.
For example alcohols: CnH(2n + 1)OH (n ≥ 1)

Famous quotes containing the words general, forms, organic and/or compounds:

The General has dedicated himself so many times, he must feel like the cornerstone of a public building.
    Adlai Stevenson (1900–1965)

    I may not tell
of the forms that pass and pass,
of that constant old, old face
    that leaps from each wave
    to wait underneath the boat
in the hope that at last she’s lost.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

Technology represents intelligence systematically applied to the problem of the body. It functions to amplify and surpass the organic limits of the body; it compensates for the body’s fragility and vulnerability ...
    Shoshana Zuboff (b. 1951)

We can come up with a working definition of life, which is what we did for the Viking mission to Mars. We said we could think in terms of a large molecule made up of carbon compounds that can replicate, or make copies of itself, and metabolize food and energy. So that’s the thought: macrocolecule, metabolism, replication.
    Cyril Ponnamperuma (b. 1923)
