Chelsea Embankment - History

History

The embankment was completed in 1874 to a design by Joseph Bazalgette, and was part of the Metropolitan Board of Works' grand scheme to provide London with a modern sewage system.

A picture of the artist busking on Chelsea Embankment appears on the cover of the 1983 album Hand of Kindness by British singer-songwriter-guitarist Richard Thompson.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

It’s nice to be a part of history but people should get it right. I may not be perfect, but I’m bloody close.
    John Lydon (formerly Johnny Rotten)

English history is all about men liking their fathers, and American history is all about men hating their fathers and trying to burn down everything they ever did.
    Malcolm Bradbury (b. 1932)

When the landscape buckles and jerks around, when a dust column of debris rises from the collapse of a block of buildings on bodies that could have been your own, when the staves of history fall awry and the barrel of time bursts apart, some turn to prayer, some to poetry: words in the memory, a stained book carried close to the body, the notebook scribbled by hand—a center of gravity.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
