Candleston Castle - Merthyr Mawr Lordship

Merthyr Mawr Lordship

Candleston was a mesne (i.e. "middle" or sub/under) manor within the fee of Merthyr Mawr, which was acquired by the St. Quintin lords of Llanbleddian and Talyfan in the 12th.c. The original St Quintin is likely to have been one of the Norman knights, by legend 12 in number, who conquered Glamorgan under Robert FitzHamon(d.1107), Earl of Gloucester, 1st. Lord of Glamorgan. Each knight was granted his own lordship, held under the lordship of Glamorgan seated at Cardiff Castle which he was free to sub-enfeoff to his own followers or to other tenants. It is uncertain when the St. Quintins sub-enfeoffed Candleston, but there is no doubt that their original tenants were the de Cantilupe family.

Famous quotes containing the words mawr and/or lordship:

When I tried to talk to my father about the kind of work I might do after college, he said, “You know, Charlotte, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to that, and it seems to me that the world really needs good, competent secretaries. Your English degree will help you.” He said this with perfect seriousness. I was an A student at Bryn Mawr ...
    Charlotte Palmer (b. c. 1925)

But his Lordship [tells] ... us that God is wholly here, and wholly there, and wholly every where; because he has no parts. I cannot comprehend nor conceive this. For methinks it implies also that the whole world is also in the whole God, and in every part of God. Nor ... can I find anything of this in the Scripture. If I could find it there, I could believe it; and if I could find it in the public doctrine of the Church, I could easily abstain from contradicting it.
    Thomas Hobbes (1579–1688)
