Famous quotes containing the words broadway, theater and/or district:

... here hundreds sit and play Bingo; here the bright lights of Broadway burn through a sea haze; here Somebodies tumble over other Somebodies and over Nobodies as well.
—For the State of New Jersey, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

Do we have the art because the absurd is the patina of waste...? Or are we face to face with a desperate or most rational effort from the deepest resources of the unconscious of us all to rescue civilization from the pit and plague of its bedding?
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)

Most works of art, like most wines, ought to be consumed in the district of their fabrication.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)
