Brighton Park Crossing - Brighton Park Positive Train Control

Brighton Park Positive Train Control

There is a Federally-mandated initiative under way to implement Positive Train Control (PTC) in the United States which would allow for track status and civil speed restriction information to be conveyed directly to the locomotive’s on-board computers and its in-cab engineers. Such controls would allow for automated braking of locomotives in the event the in-cab engineers miss seeing a restrictive signal or exceeds a posted or temporary civil speed restriction.

The Brighton Park / Pershing Main modernization project did not implement PTC in the context of providing additional automated controls over the trains which pass through this section of Chicago. Implementing PTC at Brighton Park would consist of implementing the Advanced Civil Speed Enforcement System (ACSES) and other PTC technologies which would more closely tie Rail company dispatch and control centers to on-board systems to regulate train speeds, stoppages, and permissions to proceed.

In some ways, the modernization effort at Brighton Park comprises a large necessary step between human-controlled semaphore signaling and Positive Train Control.

Famous quotes containing the words park, positive, train and/or control:

The park is filled with night and fog,
The veils are drawn about the world,
    Sara Teasdale (1884–1933)

It is easy and dismally enervating to think of opposition as merely perverse or actually evil—far more invigorating to see it as essential for honing the mind, and as a positive good in itself. For the day that moral issues cease to be fought over is the day the word “human” disappears from the race.
    Jill Tweedie (b. 1936)

The beginning of reform is not so much to equalize property as to train the noble sort of natures not to desire more, and to prevent the lower from getting more.
    Aristotle (384–322 B.C.)

America is not so much a nightmare as a non-dream. The American non-dream is precisely a move to wipe the dream out of existence. The dream is a spontaneous happening and therefore dangerous to a control system set up by the non-dreamers.
    William Burroughs (b. 1914)
