Bodyboarding Lingo

Over the years, the bodyboarding/surfing terminology has developed, evolved, and grown into its own sub-culture language. Below are some common terminology (some are regional):

Churning: When a wave is hollow, heavy, and sucking up off a reef. " Ex: "Bro, that wave was churning so hard!"

Bowl, Pit, Shack, Tube, Barrel: Describes the steep area where the crest of a wave curls over. Ex: "That wave is barreling."

Heavy: When a wave possesses a high concentration of water (power) and releases it with great potency. Ex: "That wave was so heavy."

Frothing: When you see a good wave and are excited. Ex: "Bro, I’m Frothing for a surf."

Bomb: A heavy wave. Ex: "Some bombs rolled through when we were out there."

Drilled, Worked, Pounded, Hammered, Lickings: When you wipe out (or fall) and get thrown around in the water. Ex: "I got so drilled on that bomb."
