Blue Tegu - Feeding

Feeding

These tegus are almost strictly meat eaters, most like various feeder insects like mealworms, superworms, earthworms, silkworms, crickets and roaches. They also eat mice, rats, ground turkey, crayfish, dog food (not recommended), rabbit, chicks and eggs. A varied diet will keep a blue's interest but they often have favorites and as adults stick to one food type.

It is important to make sure all insects fed are dusted with a mineral/multi-vitamin supplement; mice will not require this as they are a "complete meal," including bones. Vitamin deficiencies can lead to trouble shedding skin, lethargy and weight loss; a calcium deficiency can lead to Metabolic Bone Disease, which can be fatal.

Famous quotes containing the word feeding:

Injections ... are the best thing ever invented for feeding doctors.
    —Gabriel García Márquez (b. 1928)

Man may have his opinion as to the relative importance of feeding his body and nourishing his soul, but he is allowed by Nature to have no opinion whatever as to the need for feeding the body before the soul can think of anything but the body’s hunger.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

We went on, feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the soldier, binding up his wounds, harboring the stranger, visiting the sick, ministering to the prisoner, and burying the dead, until that blessed day at Appomattox Court House relieved the strain.
    M. E. W. Sherwood (1826–1903)
