The Drink
The signature bitter taste is produced by a combination of the quinine and the lemon pith used in manufacturing the drink. The principal difference between tonic water and bitter lemon is the addition of lemon juice and rind. Bitter lemon is drunk both by itself, and as a mixer and is sold across the world.

“Mr. Edward Carson, QC: Do you drink champagne yourself?
Mr. Oscar Wilde: Yes; iced champagne is a favourite drink of minestrongly against my doctors orders.

“Other countries drink to get drunk, and this is accepted by everyone; in France, drunkenness is a consequence, never an intention. A drink is felt as the spinning out of a pleasure, not as the necessary cause of an effect which is sought: wine is not only a philtre, it is also the leisurely act of drinking.”
—Roland Barthes (19151980)
