Famous quotes containing the words public schools, bismarck, public and/or schools:
“There are obvious places in which government can narrow the chasm between haves and have-nots. One is the public schools, which have been seen as the great leveler, the authentic melting pot. That, today, is nonsense. In his scathing study of the nations public school system entitled Savage Inequalities, Jonathan Kozol made manifest the truth: that we have a system that discriminates against the poor in everything from class size to curriculum.”
—Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
“Politics is the art of the possible.”
—Otto Von Bismarck (18151898)
“Chippenhook was the home of Judge Theophilus Harrington, known for his trenchant reply to an irate slave-owner in a runaway slave case. Judge Harrington declared that the owners claim to the slave was defective. The owner indignantly demanded to know what was lacking in his legally sound claim. The Judge exploded, A bill of sale, sir, from God Almighty!”
—For the State of Vermont, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
“You are a shameless, husband-hunting by-product of six of the most expensive finishing schools in the Western Hemisphere.”
—Tom Waldman (d. 1985)
