Birkenhead (UK Parliament Constituency) - History

History

Birkenhead was enfranchised in 1861, and the constituency was abolished by the Representation of the People Act 1918 with effect from the 1918 general election. It was then replaced by the new Birkenhead East and Birkenhead West constituencies.

Since the constituency was re-established at the 1950 general election, it has returned only Labour MPs.

At the 2010 general election, Birkenhead had the fewest candidates of any British constituency, with just Labour, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats contesting the seat.
