Bhojpuri in Nepal

Bhojpuri is spoken by at least 1.5 million people in Nepal's Outer Terai, 3% of the nation's total population. Bhojpuri districts -- those lying between Maithili- and Awadhi-speaking areas -- are: Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Parsa, Bara, Rautahat and Sarlahi District. Due to similarity, Maithili and Awadhi speakers also understand Bhojpuri. The total Number of People who can understand the language in Nepal exceeds 12 million.

Some local Radio stations in this region have been broadcasting news and entertainment in Bhojpuri, including: Gadhimai FM, Indreni FM, Bijay FM, Rupandehi FM, Samyak FM, Radio Birgunj and Narayani FM. Others in the pipeline include Masti FM, Nobel FM, Kadambari FM, Rautahat FM, Gaur FM, Radio Namaste and Madhyabindu FM. In Kathmandu the station Music FM broadcasts songs and other programming in Bhojpuri. State controlled Radio Nepal and Nepal Television also broadcast in Bojpuri. There are at least 5 Bhojpuri Newspapers in Nepal.
