Berkshire County Council - Powers and Composition

Powers and Composition

Berkshire County Council’s main focus was on education, which was unusual for a County council before the Academy scheme. As is more typical of county councils, it also ran regional services such as public transport, health provision and planning. It served to provide a strategic regional framework within which the differing plans of its six district councils could be harmonised.

As with many County Councils, the Local Government Act 1974 changed the structure of the council, and a large area around Abingdon and the Vale of the White Horse became part of Oxfordshire while Slough, which had been within Buckinghamshire, became part of Berkshire.

Famous quotes containing the words powers and/or composition:

To receive applause for works which do not demand all our powers hinders our advance towards a perfecting of our spirit. It usually means that thereafter we stand still.
    —G.C. (Georg Christoph)

Pushkin’s composition is first of all and above all a phenomenon of style, and it is from this flowered rim that I have surveyed its seep of Arcadian country, the serpentine gleam of its imported brooks, the miniature blizzards imprisoned in round crystal, and the many-hued levels of literary parody blending in the melting distance.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)
