Ben Gamla Charter School

The Ben Gamla Charter School is an English-Hebrew Charter School, the first of its kind in the U.S., located in Hollywood, Florida. It opened August 20, 2007, with approximately 400 enrolled students from kindergarten through eighth grade. The school's director is an Orthodox rabbi and at least 50% of the students accepted to the school are Jewish. The name of the school is taken from an Israelite high priest (Yehoshua ben Gamla), known in the Talmud for his campaign to establish yeshivas throughout Judea.

Famous quotes containing the words ben, charter and/or school:

    And showed the names whom love of God had blessed,
    And, lo! Ben Adhem’s name led all the rest!
    Leigh Hunt (1784–1859)

    Farewell! thou art too dear for my possessing,
    And like enough thou know’st thy estimate:
    The charter of thy worth gives thee releasing;
    My bonds in thee are all determinate.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    I’m not making light of prayers here, but of so-called school prayer, which bears as much resemblance to real spiritual experience as that freeze-dried astronaut food bears to a nice standing rib roast. From what I remember of praying in school, it was almost an insult to God, a rote exercise in moving your mouth while daydreaming or checking out the cutest boy in the seventh grade that was a far, far cry from soul-searching.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
