(*) Before the 1974, the final Coaches' Poll, also known then as the UPI Poll, was released before the bowl games. This was changed as a result of Alabama winning the 1973 Coaches' Poll national championship despite later losing to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Following the 1964 season, an undefeated Alabama team lost to Texas in the 1965 Orange Bowl, while an undefeated Arkansas team (which defeated Texas in Austin that season) beat Nebraska in the 1965 Cotton Bowl, which caused the national championship to be split between the two schools. Alabama was awarded the AP and UPI trophies (which were given out before the bowls at that time), while Arkansas was awarded the AFCA and FWAA trophies (which waited until after the bowls).

Famous quotes containing the words head and/or record:

He was thoughtful and grave—but the orders he gave
Were enough to bewilder a crew.
When he cried “Steer to starboard, but keep her head larboard!”
What on earth was the helmsman to do?
Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (1832–1898)

    The house seems heavier
Now that they have gone away.
In fact it emptied in record time.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
