Taiping's Third and Last Western Offensive
Taiping army had been raised three times in large scale western offensives. The first was in Hunan and Hubei from 1853, led by Qin Rigang, Shi Dakai, and Lai Hanying, with an army of over 300,000 in strength. The second offensive took place in Wuhan from 1855, led by Wei Jun, Chen Yucheng, and Yang Fuqing; this offensive was the largest, with over 700,000 in strength. And, the final was the Battle of Guanzhong from 1861.

Famous quotes containing the words western and/or offensive:
“Sir Walter Raleigh might well be studied, if only for the excellence of his style, for he is remarkable in the midst of so many masters. There is a natural emphasis in his style, like a mans tread, and a breathing space between the sentences, which the best of modern writing does not furnish. His chapters are like English parks, or say rather like a Western forest, where the larger growth keeps down the underwood, and one may ride on horseback through the openings.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Hats divide generally into three classes: offensive hats, defensive hats, and shrapnel.”
—Katharine Whitehorn (b. 1926)
