Background

On August 22, the Xianfeng Emperor of the Qing Dynasty died at 30 years of age. General Guan Wen of the Qing Dynasty, ordered the formerly stationary Green Standard Army, consisting of 500,000 men, to move to Eastern Henan, in order to guard the capital at Beijing.

However, the entire campaign began to look like an ambush to Chen Yucheng. Chen Decai was Chen Yucheng's uncle and did not obey Chen Yucheng's order. In November 1861, Chen Decai commanded an army offensive in southern and western Henan easily. It resulted in the Taiping Western Army to have a long battle line. At the same time, Chen Yucheng only commanded remained 50,000 of the Taiping Western Army and guarded its tail, but was surrounded by the 150,000 strong Qing army in Hefei.

When Chen Decai discovered it was a trick, he went back to save Chen Yucheng but was too late, Chen Yucheng and his entire 50,000 army were destroyed in May 1862.
