Barry Butler (footballer Born 1934) - Death

Death

Tragically Butler would never take up his position as player-coach. On 9 April 1966, Butler was killed in a car crash at the age of 31, his car having collided with a bus late at night. His funeral was held at St Peter Mancroft church in Norwich. The following year, the Norwich City player of the year award was named The Barry Butler Memorial Trophy in his honour and has been voted for by the supporters every year since then.

In 2002, when the club held an on-pitch reunion of former players prior to a match against Harwich & Parkestone to mark the club's centenary, Butler's widow attended to represent him. His son David attended a Hall of Fame dinner at Norwich City Football Club in January 2004.

Famous quotes containing the word death:

I just look at death as not a threat. It’s inevitable, and I have an assurance of eternal life.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)

How many wives have been forced by the death of well-intentioned but too protective husbands to face reality late in life, bewildered and frightened because they were strangers to it!
    Hortense Odlum (1892–?)

During these fits of absolute unconsciousness I drank, God only knows how often or how much. As a matter of course, my enemies referred the insanity to the drink rather than the drink to the insanity. I had indeed, nearly abandoned all hope of a permanent cure when I found one in the death of my wife.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)
