Baby Shop AS first started out as a department of the discount sporting goods store Sportshuset in 1968. The establishment of the department happened almost by accident as the store manager was unaware that they were going into the business when the first baby carriages appeared on their doorstep. The reason for this being that the persons in charge of the products in the store were out on business travels and had forgot to inform the store manager of their new endeavor.
The new department quickly received attention as the location was close to the women's clinique at the Norwegian hospital Rikshospitalet.
In 1992 Baby Shop as was formed and started its own chain of stores separate from the Sportshuset stores. Most of the Baby Shop stores are located next to a Sportshuset store.
