In 1999, Ayya Sudhamma became a samaneri or female Buddhist novice, at the Bhavana Society, under the tutelage of Bhante Gunaratana. In early 2003, she traveled to South Asia, where she became the first American-born woman to gain Theravada bhikkhuni ordination in Sri Lanka.
In July 2003, she returned to the United States at the invitation of the Carolina Buddhist Vihara, in Greenville, SC, where she resides and teaches.

Famous quotes containing the words ordination and/or teaching:
“Two clergymen disputing whether ordination would be valid without the imposition of both hands, the more formal one said, Do you think the Holy Dove could fly down with only one wing?”
—Horace Walpole (17171797)
“This teaching is not practical in the sense in which the New Testament is. It is not always sound sense in practice. The Brahman never proposes courageously to assault evil, but patiently to starve it out. His active faculties are paralyzed by the idea of caste, of impassable limits of destiny and the tyranny of time.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
