Awasthi is a surname of a particular sub-caste of Brahmins of Nepal and India. The Awasthi Brahmins belong to the Kanyakubja Brahmin category of Brahmins of northern India as well as in western areas of Nepal. In the 18th century, Jagannath Awasthi, a Bhumihar Brahmin zamindar of Kanyakubja Brahmin descent had bought a number of estates or parts of them in Sultanganj and Purnia in Bihar and managed his affairs with great attention and prudence. They are also found in Gaur, Saryupari and Sannaadhya Brahmins.
