Australian of The Year - Australia's Local Hero

Australia's Local Hero

Further information: List of Australian Local Hero Award recipients

As the status of the Australian of the Year award grew, it became more common for critics to call for lesser-known winners whose achievements were not otherwise recognised. The NADC was certainly not dismissive of the this view.

In 2003, the NADC addressed the issue by introducing a fourth award category known as the ‘Local Hero Award.’ The new award was part of a shift in thinking at the NADC towards the key goal of promoting good citizenship. It provides an important national forum for acknowledging those who work for the benefit of their fellow citizens.

Famous quotes containing the words australia, local and/or hero:

It is very considerably smaller than Australia and British Somaliland put together. As things stand at present there is nothing much the Texans can do about this, and ... they are inclined to shy away from the subject in ordinary conversation, muttering defensively about the size of oranges.
Alex Atkinson, British humor writer. repr. In Present Laughter, ed. Alan Coren (1982)

The local snivels through the fields:
    I sit between felt-hatted mums....
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)

The ordinary man is as courageous and invulnerable as a hero when he does not recognize any danger, when he has no eyes to see it. Conversely, the hero’s only vulnerable spot is on his back, and so exactly where he has no eyes.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
