Australian Fair Pay and Conditions Standard - Criticism of The Standard

Criticism of The Standard

Opponents of the WorkChoices reforms, such as the Australian Council of Trade Unions, have a range of criticisms of the changes. In terms of the Standard, the main criticisms have been that it will not protect minimum wages and that it will undermine many current conditions and entitlements workers previously enjoyed. The possibility for cashing out annual leave, although only possible under specific conditions, has also been cited as something which undermines current entitlements.

Famous quotes containing the words criticism of, criticism and/or standard:

However intense my experience, I am conscious of the presence and criticism of a part of me, which, as it were, is not a part of me, but a spectator, sharing no experience, but taking note of it, and that is no more I than it is you. When the play, it may be the tragedy, of life is over, the spectator goes his way. It was a kind of fiction, a work of the imagination only, so far as he was concerned.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

It is the will of God that we must have critics, and missionaries, and Congressmen, and humorists, and we must bear the burden. Meantime, I seem to have been drifting into criticism myself. But that is nothing. At the worst, criticism is nothing more than a crime, and I am not unused to that.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)

This unlettered man’s speaking and writing are standard English. Some words and phrases deemed vulgarisms and Americanisms before, he has made standard American; such as “It will pay.” It suggests that the one great rule of composition—and if I were a professor of rhetoric I should insist on this—is, to speak the truth. This first, this second, this third; pebbles in your mouth or not. This demands earnestness and manhood chiefly.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
