Bohr Model in Atomic Units

Atomic units are chosen to reflect the properties of electrons in atoms. This is particularly clear from the classical Bohr model of the hydrogen atom in its ground state. The ground state electron orbiting the hydrogen nucleus has (in the classical Bohr model):

  • Orbital velocity = 1
  • Orbital radius = 1
  • Angular momentum = 1
  • Orbital period = 2π
  • Ionization energy = 1⁄2
  • Electric field (due to nucleus) = 1
  • Electrical attractive force (due to nucleus) = 1

Famous quotes containing the words bohr, model, atomic and/or units:

An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made in a very narrow field.
    —Niels Bohr (1885–1962)

I had a wonderful job. I worked for a big model agency in Manhattan.... When I got on the subway to go to work, it was like traveling into another world. Oh, the shops were beautiful, we had Bergdorf’s, Bendel’s, Bonwit’s, DePinna. The women wore hats and gloves. Another world. At home, it was cooking, cleaning, taking care of the kids, going to PTA, Girl Scouts. But when I got into the office, everything was different, I was different.
    Estelle Shuster (b. c. 1923)

One has to look out for engineers—they begin with sewing machines and end up with the atomic bomb.
    Marcel Pagnol (1895–1974)

Even in harmonious families there is this double life: the group life, which is the one we can observe in our neighbour’s household, and, underneath, another—secret and passionate and intense—which is the real life that stamps the faces and gives character to the voices of our friends. Always in his mind each member of these social units is escaping, running away, trying to break the net which circumstances and his own affections have woven about him.
    Willa Cather (1873–1947)
