The range can be divided into four general regions from west to east:
- Middle Atlas, High Atlas, and Anti-Atlas (Morocco).
- Saharan Atlas (Algeria).
- Tell Atlas (Algeria, Tunisia).
- Aurès Mountains (Algeria, Tunisia).
