Atlantic Coast Express - Revival of The Brand

Revival of The Brand

In 2008 First Great Western introduced a single daily High Speed Train (HST) service to Newquay, during the summer, branded the "Atlantic Coast Express". This service is an extension of the 09:06 London Paddington departure to Plymouth via the Reading to Taunton Line, calling only at: Reading, Taunton, Tiverton Parkway, Exeter St Davids, Newton Abbot, Totnes, Plymouth, Par, and Newquay.

There is also a return service from Newquay at 15:04. This service does not use the West of England Main Line as its predecessor did, nor is it run by South West Trains, the successor of the London and South Western Railway, but by its rival First Great Western.

First Group also runs a regular bus service from Exeter to Bude, via Oakhampton and Holsworthy (service X9), which has been branded 'Atlantic Coast Express', with this name appearing on the indicator board of the bus and also on bus stops. The bus has to make a diversion around the back streets of Holworthy to avoid a low bridge - one of the surviving overbridges of the old railway route.

The Bluebell Railway operates some of its BR Mk. 1 coaching stock with ACE roofboards. While there is no chance of reopening all the routes of the ACE, some significant sections may soon see the return of passengers. The Bodmin and Wenford Railway plans to extend 5 miles west from Boscarne Junction into Wadebridge in the near future. The Launceston Steam Railway wants to extend its short narrow-gauge line further west along the North Cornwall line. The course of the Barnstaple to Bideford route is retained, and there is an active campaign for reopening. The LSWR/Southern Exeter to Plymouth route behond Okehampton via Tavistock is also under consideration for reopening, partly due to population growth in Tavistock, and partly because of coastal erosion on the GWR route at Dawlish.

Famous quotes containing the words revival of the, revival of, revival and/or brand:

Mother goddesses are just as silly a notion as father gods. If a revival of the myths of these cults gives woman emotional satisfaction, it does so at the price of obscuring the real conditions of life. This is why they were invented in the first place.
