Aspergillus flavus is a saprophytic fungal pathogen in the Aspergillus Genus that can cause Aspergillus ear rot of corn. A. flavus can also cause severe damage in post-harvest storage and/or transit of grains and pre-harvest infections on grain seeds. In addition to causing pre-harvest and post-harvest infections of grains, many strains produce significant quantities of aflatoxin, which contaminates grains and nuts and is a carcinogenic and acutely toxic compound. A. flavus is also an opportunistic human and animal pathogen causing aspergillosis in immunocompromised individuals. Because of its saprophytic properties, A. flavus is highly important in nutrient breakdown and recycling.
