Andrew Crosse - Other Interests

Other Interests

Among his other interests Crosse also wrote a great deal of poetry and enjoyed walking on the Quantock Hills, in which Fyne Court is set, 'at all hours of day and night, in all seasons'. He also took a keen interest in nature and the local geology.

Politically, Crosse advocated the benefits of education for the lower classes, argued against emigration, and supported the campaign by local farmers against falling food prices and high taxes during the 1820s. He was also active in party politics, speaking in support of friends at election rallies. Following the Battle of Waterloo, Crosse boarded a ship at Exeter and was able to see the captured Napoleon Bonaparte on the deck of HMS Bellerophon near Plymouth.

Crosse also served as a local magistrate.

Famous quotes containing the word interests:

Of all the anti-social vested interests the worst is the vested interest in ill-health.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

The essence of the modern state is that the universal be bound up with the complete freedom of its particular members and with private well-being, that thus the interests of family and civil society must concentrate themselves on the state.... It is only when both these moments subsist in their strength that the state can be regarded as articulated and genuinely organized.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)
