The song won the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and was also nominated for Song of the Year at the 51st Grammy Awards. The song was also nominated for the 2009 Brit Award for Best British Single.
"American Boy" was number 7 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2008. The song was listed at #238 on Pitchfork Media's Top 500 songs of the 2000s.
