World Championships
From 1948-80, the alpine skiing events at the Winter Olympics also served as the World Championships, held every two years. With the addition of the giant slalom in 1952, the combined event was dropped as an Olympic event until 1988, but remained as a World Championship event. From 1952-80, World Championship medals were awarded in the combined event, which used the results from the downhill and slalom events.
