Ais Island Naming

At the time of this writing there is a proposal put forward to the USGS to name the barrier island of Brevard, Ais Island in honor of the Ais Indians that lived there. Many consider this a more historically accurate name than the alternative, Ponce de Leon Island. The Ais Island naming proposal has much public support including organizations such as the AIA.

Famous quotes containing the words island and/or naming:

He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

See, see where Christ’s blood streams in the firmament!
One drop would save my soul—half a drop! ah, my Christ!—
Ah, rend not my heart for naming of my Christ!—
Yet will I call on him!—O, spare me, Lucifer!—
Where is it now? ‘T is gone; and see where God
Stretcheth out his arm, and bends his ireful brows!—
Mountains and hills, come, come and fall on me,
And hide me from the heavy wrath of God!
    Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593)
