Agartala Airport - World War II

World War II

During World War II, the airport was used by the United States Army Air Force Tenth Air Force 4th Combat Cargo Group, which flew C-46 Commando transport aircraft over Burma. The airport was used as a supply point from which the unit air-dropped pallets of supplies and ammunition to the advancing Allied forces on the ground.

The 4th CCG operated from the airport during December 1944 and January 1945 when the unit moved to Chittagong.

Famous quotes containing the words world and/or war:

Against the Word the unstilled world still whirled
About the center of the silent Word.
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)

There is the guilt all soldiers feel for having broken the taboo against killing, a guilt as old as war itself. Add to this the soldier’s sense of shame for having fought in actions that resulted, indirectly or directly, in the deaths of civilians. Then pile on top of that an attitude of social opprobrium, an attitude that made the fighting man feel personally morally responsible for the war, and you get your proverbial walking time bomb.
    Philip Caputo (b. 1941)
