1897 U.S. Open Golf Championship
The 1897 U.S. Open was the third U.S. Open. The golf tournament was held September 17, 1897, at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois. Joe Lloyd prevailed by one-stroke over Willie Anderson to win his first U.S. Open title.
Willie Anderson began the final round four clear of Joe Lloyd. Lloyd, however, shot a 79 over the last 18-holes to Anderson's 84 to finish a stroke ahead. Lloyd's win was capped by a 3 at the 461-yard finishing hole. Anderson needed a 4 at the last to tie Lloyd and reached the green in three, but his putt came up 6-feet short. Anderson would have to wait four more years for his first of a record four U.S. Open titles.
This was the last year that the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur championships were played simultaneously on the same course.

Famous quotes containing the words open and/or golf:
“With liberty and pleasant weather, the simplest occupation, any unquestioned country mode of life which detains us in the open air, is alluring. The man who picks peas steadily for a living is more than respectable, he is even envied by his shop-worn neighbors. We are as happy as the birds when our Good Genius permits us to pursue any outdoor work, without a sense of dissipation.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Did I make you go insane?
Did I turn up your earphone and let a siren drive through?
Did I open the door for the mustached psychiatrist
who dragged you out like a golf cart?
Did I make you go insane?”
—Anne Sexton (19281974)
