Young Labour (New Zealand) - Description

Description

Young Labour is primarily a policy discussion and campaign group of young people within the Labour Party. It is often called the 'conscience of the party'. Young Labour has worked on issues ranging from the repeal of Section 59 of the Crimes Act, and has been influential in discussions concerning climate change, liquor law reform and advocacy for universal student membership in student unions.

Although Young Labour is not an organisation which necessarily leads to a political career in Parliament or within the party, many of the Fifth Labour Government's Cabinet, including former Prime Minister Helen Clark and former Labour Party leader Phil Goff began their political activism in Young Labour.

The Young Labour executive is elected annually, and members come from all over New Zealand. There is a requirement that neither gender has over 60% represented on the executive.

Famous quotes containing the word description:

Why does philosophy use concepts and why does faith use symbols if both try to express the same ultimate? The answer, of course, is that the relation to the ultimate is not the same in each case. The philosophical relation is in principle a detached description of the basic structure in which the ultimate manifests itself. The relation of faith is in principle an involved expression of concern about the meaning of the ultimate for the faithful.
    Paul Tillich (1886–1965)

It is possible—indeed possible even according to the old conception of logic—to give in advance a description of all ‘true’ logical propositions. Hence there can never be surprises in logic.
    Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951)

To give an accurate description of what has never occurred is not merely the proper occupation of the historian, but the inalienable privilege of any man of parts and culture.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)
