X-ray - Interaction With Matter

Interaction With Matter

X-rays interact with matter in three main ways, through photoabsorption, Compton scattering, and Rayleigh scattering. The strength of these interactions depend on the energy of the X-rays and the elemental composition of the material, but not much on chemical properties since the X-ray photon energy is much higher than chemical binding energies. Photoabsorption or photoelectric absorpiton is the dominant interaction mechanism in the soft X-ray regime and for the lower hard X-ray energies. At higher energies the compton effect dominates.

Famous quotes containing the words interaction with, interaction and/or matter:

UG [universal grammar] may be regarded as a characterization of the genetically determined language faculty. One may think of this faculty as a ‘language acquisition device,’ an innate component of the human mind that yields a particular language through interaction with present experience, a device that converts experience into a system of knowledge attained: knowledge of one or another language.
    Noam Chomsky (b. 1928)

The act of putting into your mouth what the earth has grown is perhaps your most direct interaction with the earth.
    Frances Moore Lappé (b. 1944)

It doesn’t matter how new an idea is: what matters is how new it becomes.
    Elias Canetti (b. 1905)
