WXVT - History

History

Its first broadcast was on November 7, 1980. It has been a CBS affiliate for its entire existence. Before this, WJTV in Jackson had served as the default affiliate. ABC affiliate WABG-TV was actually the area's first affiliate of CBS when it launched back in October 1959. However a few months later, WJTV complained that the channel was encroaching on its service area. This is because WABG's signal reaches the far northern fringes of the Jackson market. Saga Communications purchased WXVT in 1998.

On May 4, 2012, an application was filed with the FCC to transfer ownership of WXVT from Saga Commuinications to H3 Communications. H3 Communications is owned by the adult children of Charles Harker, owner of Commonwealth Broadcasting Group, the licensee of ABC/Fox affiliate WABG and NBC affiliate WNBD-LD. On January 28, 2013, the FCC granted the sale of WXVT, and it was completed two days later.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Books of natural history aim commonly to be hasty schedules, or inventories of God’s property, by some clerk. They do not in the least teach the divine view of nature, but the popular view, or rather the popular method of studying nature, and make haste to conduct the persevering pupil only into that dilemma where the professors always dwell.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

It’s a very delicate surgical operation—to cut out the heart without killing the patient. The history of our country, however, is a very tough old patient, and we’ll do the best we can.
Dudley Nichols, U.S. screenwriter. Jean Renoir. Sorel (Philip Merivale)

This is the greatest week in the history of the world since the Creation, because as a result of what happened in this week, the world is bigger, infinitely.
    Richard M. Nixon (1913–1995)
