News Operation
As a semi-satellite of WJTV, WHLT currently only simulcasts its parent outlet's weekday morning show. The latter station does not air WJTV's newscasts seen weekdays at noon, weeknights at 5 and/or at 6, as well as weekends. The weeknight edition of the CBS Evening News is shown taped-delayed at 6 on WHLT as opposed to the regular time slot like other CBS affiliates in the Central Time Zone. Usually, most semi-satellites of another station provide some coverage of their home territory (in this case, the Pine Belt of Mississippi). On May 8, 2012, WHLT began offering a twenty minute abbreviated newscast seen weeknights at 10 (known as WHLT 22 News) featuring two personalities based out of its Hattiesburg studios.
During that program, a weather segment (branded as "Storm Team 22") that is taped in advance at WJTV's facility airs on the Hattiesburg station. WHLT then simulcasts its parent for national/world news and sports headlines until 10:35. That station will sometimes share video footage with WJTV for regional coverage of Mississippi essentially acting as a bureau. At some point in spring 2012, WJTV upgraded local news production to 16:9 enhanced definition widescreen. It is unknown if the simulcasts aired on WHLT and its abbreviated newscast seen weeknights at 10 was included in the change.
