History

The name Wissen was first mentioned in the year 1013 in a certificate (State archives Hannover). The settlement-origin was found 1048 in the second settlement period in the grubbing district at the edge of the cologne archdiocese and called "Wisnerofanc".

The house of Arenberg, burgraves of the electorate of Cologne became the maorial in 1176. After they became extinct in the year 1280, the archbishopric of cologne moved the parish of wissen as a completed loan to the left side of the Sieg river. The part of the parish from the right side of the Sieg river remained to the men of Wildenburg, whose line Werther of the House of Hatzfeld later took the part of Wissen which was on the left side as a fief, too.

1803-1815 parts of the parish to Nassau, after that the parish was sworn under Prussian reign and Wissen became a seat of a “Bürgermeisterei”. In the 19th century the traffic connection was hardly improved and bigger industries moved to Wissen. On the 19th of April 1969 Wissen became the city rights. The incorporation of the three until then autonomous communities Elbergrund, Köttingerhöhe and Schönstein followed on the 7th of June 1969.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

To care for the quarrels of the past, to identify oneself passionately with a cause that became, politically speaking, a losing cause with the birth of the modern world, is to experience a kind of straining against reality, a rebellious nonconformity that, again, is rare in America, where children are instructed in the virtues of the system they live under, as though history had achieved a happy ending in American civics.
    Mary McCarthy (1912–1989)

Certainly there is not the fight recorded in Concord history, at least, if in the history of America, that will bear a moment’s comparison with this, whether for the numbers engaged in it, or for the patriotism and heroism displayed.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

When the history of this period is written, [William Jennings] Bryan will stand out as one of the most remarkable men of his generation and one of the biggest political men of our country.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
