Wigan Central Railway Station - Location and Construction

Location and Construction

Central station was some way away from the two main stations (North Western and Wallgate) which are on the western edge of the town centre. Central station was built by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (later to become the Great Central) and opened on 3 October 1892. It replaced Wigan (Darlington Street) station, which had opened on 1 April 1884, on the extension of the line nearer to the town centre. Wigan Central was the terminus of the Wigan Junction Railways from Glazebrook Junction (and on to Manchester Central) and closed on 2 November 1964.
