Wickford - New Prison Development

New Prison Development

Under plans by the Labour government's Justice Minister Jack Straw, land near the Runwell Hospital mental institute would be redeveloped into a prison capable of accommodating up to 1,500 inmates which is scheduled to open as early as 2013, with possible plans for an American-style Supermax jail with a capacity of 2,500.

Basildon Borough Council leader Malcolm Buckley has pledged to fight the proposals, even though the jail would be built on land under the administration of the neighbouring Chelmsford Borough Council.

Famous quotes containing the words prison and/or development:

The most anxious man in a prison is the governor.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

For the child whose impulsiveness is indulged, who retains his primitive-discharge mechanisms, is not only an ill-behaved child but a child whose intellectual development is slowed down. No matter how well he is endowed intellectually, if direct action and immediate gratification are the guiding principles of his behavior, there will be less incentive to develop the higher mental processes, to reason, to employ the imagination creatively. . . .
    Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)
