Famous quotes containing the words whistle, stop and/or marathon:

I hope in these days we have heard the last of conformity and consistency. Let the words be gazetted and ridiculous henceforward. Instead of the gong for dinner, let us hear a whistle from the Spartan fife.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

What the vast majority of American children needs is to stop being pampered, stop being indulged, stop being chauffeured, stop being catered to. In the final analysis it is not what you do for your children but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings.
    Ann Landers (b. 1918)

In their eyes I have seen
the pin men of madness in marathon trim
race round the track of the stadium pupil.
    Patricia K. Page (b. 1916)
