Washington Mall

Washington Mall is a mostly defunct enclosed shopping mall located in South Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, just outside the city of Washington, formerly managed by J J Gumberg Co. and now by Oxford Development Company. It is owned by Falconi, a local developer which also owns a number of properties throughout Washington County. Its anchor, JCPenney, closed in February 2007 and relocated to the defunct Foundry shopping center less than a mile away in March 2007; however, due to ground settling problems at the aforementioned retail complex and financial difficulties with the property owner, JCPenney moved back to the Washington Mall in mid-September 2008.

As of October 2008, the remaining anchor tenants include Staples, Toys R Us, JoAnn Fabrics, and The Home Depot. Only JoAnn Fabrics and a Rite Aid actually have entrances from inside the mall. Pavlov's Place, a boarding and training facility for dogs, opened in 2006.

The mall was at one time the preeminent place for shopping in Washington. Up until the 1990s, it was indeed faring its own. However, as the crosstown rival Franklin Mall (now Washington Crown Center) was expanded and completely remodeled, Washington Mall was severely affected by this. There have been plans to demolish and rebuild the mall as a strip shopping center, although nothing has materialized.

Famous quotes containing the words washington and/or mall:

I do not mean to exclude altogether the idea of patriotism. I know it exists, and I know it has done much in the present contest. But I will venture to assert, that a great and lasting war can never be supported on this principle alone. It must be aided by a prospect of interest, or some reward.
    —George Washington (1732–1799)

Finishing schools in the fifties were a good place to store girls for a few years before marrying them off, a satisfactory rest stop between college weekends spent husband hunting. It was a haven for those of us adept at styling each other’s hair, playing canasta, and chain smoking Pall Mall extra-long cigarettes.
