In 2006 in the borough Wandsbek were living 409,771 people. The population density was 2,777 inhabitants per square kilometre (7,192 /sq mi). 16.5% were children under the age of 18, and 22% were 65 years of age or older. 10.1% were immigrants. 18,452 people were registered as unemployed. In 1999 there were 200,560 households out of which 21.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them and 41.6% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.02.
In 2006 there were 37,957 criminal offences in borough (93 crimes per 1,000 people).
