Vitesse - History

History

The idea of conceiving a football team stemmed from the club's early roots as a cricket club.

Vitesse once attracted big name signings into its ranks including Roy Makaay, Nikos Machlas, Sander Westerveld, Danko Lazovic, Pierre van Hooijdonk, Mahamadou Diarra and Philip Cocu.

In the 1980s, the club was threatened with bankruptcy, the solution to which was to form a new administrative board to govern both the professionals and the amateur sides. This is because up until the 1980s, the club had incorporated both its professional and its amateur players into its club structure. It was restructured again in 2003 when it could have gone bankrupt again, when the timely intervention of the Arnhem city council bought GelreDome, and created a financial rescue package to salvage the club.

The clubs training ground and youth development system are based at the National Sports Centre Papendal.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

What would we not give for some great poem to read now, which would be in harmony with the scenery,—for if men read aright, methinks they would never read anything but poems. No history nor philosophy can supply their place.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

We have need of history in its entirety, not to fall back into it, but to see if we can escape from it.
    José Ortega Y Gasset (1883–1955)

These anyway might think it was important
That human history should not be shortened.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
